02/20/2007 Defenseman Alexei Semenov (Florida Panthers) returns to NHL

Russian Super League -  Defenseman Alexei Semenov (Florida Panthers) left his Russian club HC Salavat Yulayev and returned to his NHL club Florida Panthers. This has been a surprising development, but likely had to do with the club entering the rebuilding stage and looking for new blood to replenish the thinning roster. Semenov broke his Russian contract in his return, but since there is no agreement between the NHL and Russian Super League, there is little Salavat can do in this case. Semenov has already skated for the Panthers in four game, averaging just over 10 minutes of ice time in each contest.

Talent Analysis:
Alexei Semenov is a full package, two way defenseman. He is a very large defenseman who has learned how to use his frame in physical hockey. Alexei is an excellent body checker, and was considered the best open ice hitter of the OHL. Alexeiís defensive abilities are top notch. He possesses great hockey sense and does not venture out of his position to make an unnecessary check, instead choosing to use his excellent reach to slow down his opponents. Alexei Semenov possesses a strong offensive upside. He has a booming shot and great aim. Alexeiís average skating sometimes gets him in trouble, leaving room for improvement. With a towering frame and great talent, Alexei is an unquestionable presence of the ice.
Back In Russia:
Alexei Semenov was born in Murmansk, Russia. In the mid 90s he joined the Soviet Wings hockey school in Moscow and began playing with the teamís junior affiliate. After the 1997-98 season, Alexei moved on from the Soviet Wings to the SKA St. Petersburg in hopes of earning a roster spot with that team. He was not successful in achieving his goal and spent a large part of the season with SKAís junior affiliate. Since he was not able to make SKAís main roster, Alexeiís exposure to NHL scouts was very limited. Partially in response to this, Alexei made the decision to move to North America and play in the OHL.

He joined the Sudbury Wolves for the second half of the 1998-99 regular season. Alexei spent the first season in the OHL adjusting to the North American style of play. He did not produce many points and was not a dominant presence on the ice. The Edmonton Oilers drafted Alexei in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft in the 2nd round, 36th overall. He was a higher rated player, but may have slipped due to his uninspired performance in the OHL. Things changed during the 1999-00 season, after which he was voted best body checker and best defensive defenseman in the OHL. He also came in second as the Most under-rated player and most improved player in the OHL. He was also voted to OHLís 3rd All Star team. Alexeiís achievements and development did not slow down after this successful season. During the 2000-01 season he ran away with all OHLís defenseman awards, being awarded the Max Kaminsky Trophy as OHLís top defenseman and selected to the 1st OHL All-Star team and 3rd CHL All Star team. After the 2001 Edmonton Oilers training camp, he began the 2001-02 season with the Hamilton Bulldogs. Alexei will likely remain with Hamilton for most of the season, but may see some ice time in the NHL with the Oilers.
NHL Outlook:
Alexei Semenov has continued developing into a All Star caliber NHL defenseman. Currently Alexei is playing on Edmonton's first defensive pairing with Eric Brewer. He is playing on average 18-19 minutes a game. According to Bob Smith, a hockey observer from Sudbury, Alexei Semenov "will win the Norris Trophy within five years". He goes further to state that he "seasons tickets to the Sudbury Wolves (OHL-CHL) in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada for many years and have seen many great players from the Wolves and visiting teams, such as Eric Lindros, Chris Pronger and many more and have yet to see a player with as much "up-side" as Alexei Semenov." To fully tap Alexeiís upside the Edmonton Oilers will have to be patient. As with the OHL, he will need at least a season to adjust to the new level of hockey at the AHL level before he can make a successful transition to the NHL. After a couple of seasons in the AHL with limited NHL ice time, Alexei will be ready to join the Edmonton Oilers full time and become one of NHLís best defensemen.
