Talent Analysis:
Jan.'04 Talent Analysis Update:
Over the course of the first half of the 2003-04 season, Mikhnov has become even more comfortable with his size. He has become very effective against the boards and in the corners, and has been almost impossible for most defensemen to clear out of the crease. As Mikhnov has been gaining strength, he has maintained his skating and top speed at a very high level. He has also displayed very good puck control and surprisingly soft hands. Finally, Mikhnov’s wrist shot sets him apart from most other forwards
Back In Russia:
2001-02 Update:
Alexei started the season outside Dynamo Moscow’s roster. Dynamo Moscow acquired many veteran forwards over the off season, an action that little room to develop younger talent. Alexei split the beginning of the season between Dynamo’s junior team Dynamo 2 and Dynamo’s fourth line. His play was uninspired due to no ice time and his ice time was non existent due to his uninspired play. During the December break in the Super League season for International competition, Alexei attempted to join another team - Salavat Yulayev, but was unsuccessful in earning a roster spot, returning back to Dynamo Moscow. During December and January, a major restructuring occurred in Dynamo, which included the firings of both the head coach and the general manager of the team and the release of several high level veteran players. Former Dynamo coach Zinatulla Bilyaletdinov was hired as team’s new head coach. Being a coach famous for his ability to develop young talent, he opened the door to Dynamo’s main line up for players like youngsters Safonov, Ovechkin and Alexei Mikhnov. Alexei did not waste his chance and climbed out of the cellar and onto Dynamo’s third line. He has remained there for the rest of the regular season.

Alexei Mikhnov began his career in Kiev Ukraine in the system of then strong Sokol Kiev hockey club. After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the deterioration of the hockey systems in Ukraine, Alexei went Eastward to Russia to continue his hockey career. There he joined Torpedo Yaroslavl, a hockey system known for inheriting many young players from other former Soviet Republics and completing their development. Alexei continued playing for Torpedo’s, now Lokomotiv’s junior team. When he was promoted to the team’s main lineup, he was in conflict with the head coach, Vladimir Vorobiev. According to him, he "He couldn't come to an understanding with the head coach." The conflict was never resolved, and Alexei started the next season in Dynamo Moscow system. Though he never got a serious opportunity to play with Dynamo Moscow in the Super League, it was still a step up in his career as Alexei moved from the Junior First League to the adult Upper League. There he played for Dynamo’s affiliate THK Tver and was also on loan to Vladimir Tikhonov’s HK Moscow for four games. Alexei Mikhnov started the 2001-02 season with Dynamo Moscow and is expected to remain in the team’s lineup this season.
NHL Outlook:
Jan.'04 NHL Section Update:
Overall, Mikhnov is one of the best young NHL prospects playing in Russia. His play has matured significantly over the past couple of seasons, while he skated with Super League’s Sibir Novosibirsk. However, the towering forward should be left alone in Russia for another season to further capitalize on his emerging role of a leader on a Super League club.

Alexei Mikhnov’s size and blooming abilities earned him a 8th ranking amongst European skaters. He was second among the strong generation of players to come out of the Torpedo Yaroslavl’s hockey system after Pavel Vorobiev. The Edmonton Oilers drafted Alexei with their first pick in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, 17th overall in the first round. The Oilers organization has chosen to take its time with Alexei and bring him up slowly. However, they were tested last season when Alexei Mihnov’s development was slowed with the mishandling of him by Dynamo Moscow organization. Towards the end of the 2000-01 season he played well for Dynamo’s affiliate, THK Tver, and was called up to play for the main team on several occasions. It is unclear whether the Oilers have attempted to bring Alexei to North America this season, but he has began the 2001-02 preseason with Dynamo Moscow. Alexei Mikhnov has the potential to develop into a player like Nikolai Antropov and Dave Andreychuk. He is at least 2 seasons away from making a serious bid for a spot on the Edmonton Oilers. First he has to prove himself in the Russian Super League.
