06/03/2009 KHL Draft recap

Continental Hockey League (KHL) -  The first ever KHL Draft has been held in June 1st and many interesting players have been drafted by the KHL teams. The first overall pick has been Mikhail Pashnin , picked up by CSKA Moscow. Among them there are Evgeni Molotilov and Stefan Stepanov (Atlant Mytischi), Alexander Gogolev (Spartak Moscow). Goalie Dmitri Shikin landed in Khabarovsk while defender Nikita Zaitsev in Novosibirsk. The teams did draft some interesting foreigners like Victor Hedman, Zack Kassian, Taylor Hall and Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson. Some of the Belarussian promising talents, like Mikhail Stefanovich (Toronto Maple Leafs) and Kirill Gotovets have been drafted too. Talent Analysis:
A reliable defenseman, who doesn't stand out in any particular cathegory, but also has no obvious holes...a capable skater, also backwards...good offensive instincts, plays a good two-way game without exaggerating in joining the rush...okay passing game, isn't overly creative in the offensive zone, but rarely makes glaring mistakes...has a hard low shot which should use (and perhaps train too) more often...average puckhandling, can bring up the puck if not pressured...can catch up with forwards thanks to his good skating...has to bulk up and to gain experience...

NHL Outlook:
Pashnin is an interesting defenseman that broke out in the 08-09 season, where he played in the WJC and was the first overall pick in the first-in-history KHL draft. Despite these good premises he remains a long shot towards the NHL for two reasons. The first is his not big size, which can hurt him in the more demanding NA style, and the second is his overall level of play. Being not a specialist nor a special talent, he seems to lack that extra gear required to European players in order to have a successful NHL career. But a lot can change in the next 2-3 years.
