05/05/2008 Belarus add four NHL players to squad ( Andrei and Sergei Kostytsin)

Continental Hockey League (KHL) -  HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (Reuters) - Belarus added four NHL players to their lineup on Monday as teams continued to tweak their rosters at the ice hockey world championships. The Montreal Canadiens' loss has been Belarus's gain with forwards Andrei Kostitsyn (Montreal Canadiens), Sergei Kostitsyn and Mikhail Grabovski joining the national squad along with Ruslan Salei of the Colorado Avalanche after their teams were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs. 12/14/2005 Andrei Kostitsyn (Montreal Canadiens) - welcome to the NHL!

Andrei Kostytsin made his NHL debut with the Montreal Canadiens on December 1st, 2005. The young forward skated for just 40 seconds, but the NHL debut is a welcome sign in the player’s development, as he has not stood out as one of the scoring leaders in the AHL before being called up. After getting a bit more than a minute of total ice time in the first two contests, got a few more shifts in the third contest and earned his keep by connecting on Chris Higgins’ one timer from behind the net to put the puck top shelf. Talent Analysis:
Size and Physical Play: Not a big guy at just above 6’0 and 190 pounds, and plays the open ice style of hockey without much hitting. Does not hesitate to split the defense though or try to get around next to the boards. Can take a hit. Skating: Above average skater and fast acceleration. Good lateral movement. Shot: Strong slap and wrist shots, with a good release. Hockey Sense: Sees the ice well and can sense plays developing. Can give a very nice pass and set up a one timer. Technical Skills: Solid technically
Back In Russia:
Born in Novopolotsk, Belarus, Andrei spent his career playing in Polimir Novopolotsk hockey school. In the summer of 2002 he signed with CSKA Moscow and moved to Russia. 02-03: Representede Belarus for the second year in a row at the U20 WJC. Spent the beginning of the season with with CSKA (dressed for 6 games) and CSKA 2. Showed maturity when moved from CSKA 2 to the professional Upper League, though faied to stick with the team towards the playoffs run.
2003-04 Update: Andrei Kostytsin’s returned to CSKA Moscow with many observers expecting the young forward to develop into one of the club’s impact players. While possessing great speed and puckhandling ability, he is not a team player and tries to do too much by himself. Kostytsin would often grab the puck and push it up the ice without even raising his head to find his linemates. During the 2003-04 season, the young forward did not look as effective as his young teammates Polushin and Anshakov, also not showing enough to merit the 10th overall pick the Montreal Canadiens used to draft him in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. The young forward may have been caught in a vicious cycle: head coach Tikhonov, who is famous for playing favorites, would not use him because of his reckless style, and Kostytsin’s development did not move forward because of lack of experience. The Montreal prospect spent only 11 games in CSKA’s lineup, skating the rest of the time for the club’s junior farm team. With the junior club he looked great, but that was largely because of the significantly lower quality of opposition. Tikhonov is now gone as CSKA’s head coach and the new coach Vyacheslav Bykov will likely give Kostytsin a close look this summer. The young forward will be given more chances to make the Super League next season, which is going to be a critical one for his development.
NHL Outlook:
The Montreal Canadiens selected Andrei Kostytsin in the first round of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft with their 10th overall pick. The early selection of the young forward was not surprising, considering the hype that generated around him. However, beyond the hype, Montreal got a capable forward for their pick. The young forward will hopefulyl make CSKA Moscow's roster for the 2003-04 season. If he does not, look for him to be over in North America within a year.
