Talent Analysis:
Anton is possesses an imposing size for a defenseman. His 6""3 and 212 pound frame is already beginning to fill in at 18 years of age. He does need to bulk, especially in the upper body. Anton is very balanced and quick. He has not experienced any growing pains typical of people his stature, as had Viktor Kozlov when he was 18. He does need to work on his skating, but he skates well backwards - an important trait for a defenseman. Anton""s primary role, largely due to his size, is on the defense. He is a North American, tough, physical player and often delivers tough open ice hits. Anton's endurance is very strong and he did very well at the pre draft tests. Anton uses his body very well, avoiding the initial shortcoming of many smaller European players who use their stick more then their body during checking. Anton fights hard next to the boards, not leaving a puck uncontested. Anton""s offensive potential is currently limited. He may have some untapped offensive ability, but his primary role with his club and the national team is defensive. On both teams he spent the 01-02 season with in a pairing with Denis Grot, who handled the more offensive responsibilities. Anton does have an above average shot, but rarely uses it, preferring to pass off the puck instead to someone on the offense. Anton""s vision of the ice is solid, he understands his responsibilities and executes them well. His main downside is his lack of offensive experience, but that will come with time as he develops. It is an impressive feat when at 18 a player earned the trust to play on the Upper League Elektrostal""s first defensive pairing along with Vancouver Canucks prospect Denis Grot. Mentally, Anton has great concentration and focus. He gets along great with other players. Anton is also a very hard worker on and off the ice and is a great player to coach. He also knows English well, which eliminates the a lot of the cultural and all of the communication barriers.
Back In Russia:
2002-03 Season Review: Soon after the draft, Anton Kadeikin signed a three year deal with the New Jersey Devils, clearing the way for his arrival in North America. The young defenseman spent most of the camp with the Devils, before being shipped over to the Sarnia Sting, who drafted him in the CHL Import Draft. The defenseman made a significant impact on the squad, being one of the team
NHL Outlook:
Anton possesses many positive qualities that make him a very attractive player in the upcoming NHL draft. Though not highly ranked by the Central Scouting Bureau, he does possess great natural size and has the potential of becoming a great defensive defenseman. He has not yet shown much offensive upside, which will hurt him, but his shot will continue to develop and though it is unlikely that he will some day quarterback a power play unit, he will sneak in a goal once in a while with a booming shot, a la Scott Stevens. The New Jersey Devils heavily scouted Anton while he played with Elemash Elektrostal in Russia. They chose him with their first pick in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, 51st overall in the second round. He will likely spend the 2002-03 season with Metallurg Novokuznetsk in the Russian Super League.
