12/25/2006 U20 Russian squad’s lineup related notes

As the Russian roster is finalized, a couple of interesting notes have leaked through from our observers. First, the 89 born Alexey Cherepanov, who was supposed to play a depth role on the Russian squad, has been skating on the top line throughout the preparations, with either Ilya Zubov (Ottawa Senators) or Gennadi Churilov (undrafted) centering the second line, and Anisimov the third. The third unit has consistently been Alexander Vasyunov (New Jersey Devils), Artem Anisimov (New York Rangers) and Igor Makarov (Chicago Blackhawks). Kiryukhin centered Russia’s fifth line that was released. The young forward, who captained the squad that competed at the Canada Russia Challenge was retained as a
12/24/2006 Surprising omissions from Russia's U20 roster

With the team Russia roster announced, the surprising omission is goaltender Ilya Proskuryakov, who at some moments outplayed Varlamov during this season’s previous U20 tournaments. Forward Andrei Popov (Philadelphia Flyers), who was highly touted prior to last year’s draft and delivered a fairly strong performance thus far this season ins the Super League with HC Traktor (1 goal and 10 assists in 30 games), playing much better in the Super League than some of the players who made the team. The final surprising omission is that of CHL defenseman Ivan Vishnevsky (Dallas Stars), though his is more understandable as he is currently playing in North America and has not attended many international tournaments this or last season. Still, he would have provided Russia another valuable cannon from the blue line.
