04/28/2009 Team Russia U18 World Championships review

Despite icing a roster that didn't blow anyone away, Team Russia finished the U18 World Championships with a silver medal, losing to Team USA in the final. “In general, only a few people believed that we would reach the finals," said the tournament’s All-Star Team forward Vladimir Tarasenko , who was arguably Russia's top player and one of the best overall in the tournament. 04/20/2009 Russia gets the silver, loses the finals

With a disciplined performance, helped by the home crowd, team USA won the 2009 U18 World Championships. Just like it happened last year, it wasn't the best showing by Russia, who allowed a couple of quick goals to the Americans in the first period, despite some decent play by goalie Igor Bobkov. Vladimir Tarasenko and Kirill Kabanov did their best reverting the momentum, but in the second period USA managed to keep the opponents silent, adding an additional powerplay marker to make it a 3-0 game. In the third period perhaps the Russians gave up, allowing the Americans to run the score up by two additional markers, ending the match 5-0. Unfortunately Russian top guys like Alexander Burmistrov and Evgeny Kuznetsov, weren't as confidents as usual. Dmitri Orlov either hasn't played his best hockey as well as the rest of the team. Igor Bobkov has been named best goalie of the tournament, but was oddly left out from the All Star team, in which instead was present Vladimir Tarasenko.
04/18/2009 Russia gets to the finals!

With a great team performance team Russia prompted past Finland 4-0. Igor Bobkov has been stellar between the pipes with a fantastic 51-save shutout. But probably team Russia's top player has been Evgeny Kuznetsov , author of three assists and one goal. He caused the first goal of the game, scored by Maxim Kitsyn , when he crashed the net prior of being pokecheked by a Finn who removed him the puck, that arrived to Kitsin who had just to raise it over Orio. Kuznetsov himself doubled the score at the twentyeigth minute with a top shelf backhander after a scramble in front of the opponent goaltender. In the third period he carried on his show setting up Alexander Burmistrov from the slot, who put the puck in the top left corner with an excellent snap shot. In the garbage time he collected yet another point assisting Kitsyn's second goal. Team Russia will face USA in the finals scheduled for Sunday, April 18th.

04/16/2009 Day Six USA vs Russia Live Blog

Islanders win the NHL Draft Lottery, a lot of disappointed people in this building I'm sure. In between games I interviewed the Thrashers Head of Scouting and found time to consume the greatest concession not sold in NHL buildings...the legendary "Taco In A Bag" which we need in Philips Arena. Russians had a skating practice. I was surprised at how hard they skated on a game day. Here they are collecting pucks after practice. We are underway in the 1st here in Fargo, ND. Teams feeling each out a bit early. No glorious chances yet. Nieto just missed Shore on a 2>1. I found out that Nieto is a California kids who started out playing hockey on roller skates--I'm totally rooting for him to make the NHL someday. READ MORE
