05/19/2011 Alexei Emelin (Montreal Canadiens) signs one year deal with the Habs

Defensive prospect Alexei Emelin (Montreal Canadiens) signed a one year deal with the Habs this past week. The young defensive prospect has been in the KHL for the past several seasons and while he has "flirted" with the move to the NHL, it has all been words previously. This time the situation appears to have been more positive, as Emelin, while playing well in Russia, has not had as much success, which could have been a bit of a wake up call to consider all his options and recognize the need for a change. His play in the World Championships was above average and he showed, probably really for the first time to this degree, that he is ready in a very physical environment. The contract is a two-way one year ~1M dollars in base and possibly up to ~3M in total if he sticks in the NHL.
05/14/2011 Russia loses to Finland in Worlds semifinals

It is the fourth Sweden-Finland final ever for this tournament. The Swedes won gold in 1992 and 1998, while Finland spoiled Tre Kronor’s home-ice party in 1995 and claimed its lone Worlds gold. "We’re very happy to be among the best two teams in the world," said Finnish head coach Jukka Jalonen. "We deserved it, as we played a very good game. Our power play worked well and our penalty kill worked well. That’s the reason we won today." The most famous confrontation between Sweden and Finland was at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy, where Nicklas Lidström gave Tre Kronor gold with his early third-period goal in a 3-2 win. Sweden's last Worlds gold came against the Czechs later that year. (IIHF.com article) READ MORE
05/09/2011 Hockey champions Czech Republic deny Russia revenge win

BRATISLAVA — Reigning world champions Czech Republic maintained their qualifying Group E lead at the ice hockey world championships by beating Russia 3-2 in a repeat of last year's final on Sunday. Jakub Voracek, Jaromir Jagr (New York Rangers) and Tomas Plekanec scored one apiece, while goalkeeper Ondrej Pavelec made 24 saves to give the Czechs a 7-6 advantage in head to head meetings with Russia at the world championships. 05/04/2011 Yes, some Thrashers still play hockey and even advance in World Championships

Believe it or not, there are some Atlanta Thrashers players donning the skates and playing hockey right now. Sorry Winnipeg, only a couple of them are wearing anything remotely Canadian. Six Thrashers players and a pair of prospects put on a uniform for their home countries in the 2011 IIHF World Championships in Slovakia and all but perhaps one of the guys will make it out of the Preliminary Round....Thrashers prospect Ilya Nikulin (Atlanta Thrashers), who still hasn’t tried to make the move from the KHL to the pros, helped the Russian team secure a spot in the second round, while Arturs Kulda and his Latvian team will be looking to stave off elimination in a must-win game against Denmark on Wednesday. 05/02/2011 Russia outlasts Slovenia No time for miracles, Radulov's goal lifts Russia over Slovenia.

RATISLAVA – The game was tied 4-4 with 3:41 remaining, and while beating Slovenia may not seem like a huge feat, Alexander Radulov (Nashville Predators) is surely a Russian hero today, thanks to his game winning 5-4 goal.

04/30/2011 History! Germany 2, Russia 0 Germans beat powerhouse Russians for first time in 33 tries

BRATISLAVA – Germany shocked Russia to open the 2011 tournament, edging the perennial World Championship finalists 2-0. It was the first German victory over Russia in Worlds history. Thomas Greilinger scored the winning goal early in the second period.
Germany – Russia 2-0 (1-0, 0-0, 1-0)
After Russia twice beat Germany by just one goal at last year’s IIHF World Championship, many expected another tight affair to open this year’s tournament. But virtually no one foresaw the Germans coming out on top. It proves that anything can happen in modern international hockey. (IIHF.com article by Lucas Aykroyd) READ MORE
